If only the President had walked back comments weeks ago, the outcome might have been different. Those comments were a kick and a punch to the jaw of Canadians.
However, could it be that the US wants Canada to split? Would that make it easier to get unfettered access across the Arctic, easier access to Alberta and Newfld/Labrador energy, and have tailored deals for other resources – by Province?
