It was SEVERAL years ago that I was told by a bank in Tapacula, Mexico that NO BANK in Tapachula would exchange dollars for pesos. I eventually found a place to exchange money: a hole in the wall store with a small darkened window that I had to slip my dollars through. He was kind enough to give me more than what he initially wanted to so I could pay for my hotel, etc.
Unlike Mexico, Xeka, Guatemala had two large exchanges and never hesitated to exchange my dollars for quetzals (or vice versa).
